The state is massive but there is so much to do. Its beautiful landscapes offer stunning places to walk and national parks to visit. There is also the world-famous space center and fantastic dining out options. We have compiled a list of our top 15 things to do whilst you’re in Texas.
Guadalupe National park
Located 100 miles from El Paso, the national park may seem far away but it is well worth a visit. The national park is home to a number of varying wildlife species and the views are stunning. Whilst the mountains might look intimidating at first they offer a picturesque view for any tourist to capture both in memory and on camera. The trails will help you explore all over the park and will even guide you around wildlife, lush woodlands, and natural hot springs.
There is a visiting center in Pine Springs where you can find all the information about the trails and other features the park has to offer.
The Alamo
This is one of the most important historic buildings in the USA. In 1836, the Texan revolution was in full force, the Alamo was the site that marked the turning point for Texans during this war. Texan forces barricaded themselves within the building and eventually managed to overwhelm the opposing Mexican troops of about 6,000 men.

The Texas State Capitol
The building stands over 300 feet tall and covers 22 acres of land in Austin. The building was built in 1888 and is the government seat for Texas, it’s home to the offices of the Texas legislature and the governor of Texas.
Tours of the grounds are available and you will be guided around this historical building and even shown the memorial site to veterans and service members of the Vietnam war.
Natural Bridge Caverns
The caverns are the largest accessible caves in the entire United States Country. There are many tours including a lantern tour of the caverns available to visitors and offer a detailed look at the caves, just as the original discoverers did. There are other activities such as an open-air maze and a treetop canopy challenge. There is so much to see and do here and this is definitely an activity not to be missed.
Hamilton Pool
Fancy a break from the city? The Hamilton Pool is no better place to visit, especially on a hot day. The pool is a natural wonder to all who visit it and has its own waterfall from the creek residing 50 feet above. The pool is a great place to cool down and is arguably better than an artificial pool. It’s a fun day out for your friends and family.
Texas State Fair
The fair is held in the 277-acre Fair Park, during the autumn months. The fair lasts for three weeks and is definitely a must-see if you are visiting Texas around autumn time! There is so much entertainment on offer, from the fair rides and amusement games to military parades and food stands. The Texas state fair began in 1952 and has welcomed visitors ever since. The park is also home to nine museums which you can visit in between soaking up the fair fun. The popular museums include the African American museum and the Age of Steam Museum.
Perot Museum of Nature and Science
This is the newest museum to open in Dallas. Although the museum has been open since December 2012 it’s still Dallas’ newest attraction and has gained a lot of attention from visitors. The museum is conveniently located in the Arts District between uptown and downtown Dallas. There are many exhibits and attractions on offer at this museum and even more attractions. From an IMAX theater to giant leapfrogs, a one-acre science park, and musical instruments.
Barbequed Food
It wouldn’t be a trip to Texas without sampling Texas’ all-famous barbecued food. The state’s famous cuisine is barbecue brisket cooked over a fire for a long time, a very long time. If you want good food then you’re in the right place!
Padre Island National Seashore
This is the longest undeveloped island, spanning over 70 miles from end to end. The island is a renowned spot for bird watchers and the island is even a resting spot for 350 bird species as they make their annual migration. Its 130,000 acres are home to some of the rarest animal species, such as turtles and birds. Padre Island has a visitors center that offers a well of information on the location and species that reside here.
Houston Space Center
Are you a lover of all things space? Visit the Johnson Space Center, located directly in the heart of Houston. The space center is Houston’s number one attraction. Whilst at the Space center you will encounter the largest collection of space artifacts in southwest America. You will see everything from flown spacecraft to other interesting artifacts. There is always something new to see, so ensure you do not miss out. If you’ve ever wondered what the planet Mars is like, then check out the red planet by visiting the Mission Mars exhibit. Experience life on the red planet for yourself, from the virtual martian sunset, feel the rock cliffs inspired by Mars and even climb into a simulated version of Orion’s Capsule. San Antonio River Walk
The beautiful walk along San Antonio’s river is totally worth it. The walk spans several miles, passing hotels, shops, and restaurants as you go. The walk is a spectacular way of looking at the city and is advised you encounter it twice, once in the day and again at night. You can walk along the river and stop for a bite to eat or peer into the shops as you go. What better way to spend your day?
Big Bend National Park
Located on the ‘big bend’ of the Rio Grande river. This is how the national park got its name. It is a varied landscape that offers a look at many different wildlife species including the bald eagle. The trails span over 200 miles and allow visitors to hike across its three canyons. Altitudes span from over 1,800 feet to almost 8,000 feet. This is a day out that will be truly memorable for all and offers a fantastic picturesque view.
The moody gardens aquarium
This is the top attraction in Galveston. It is known for its incredible glass pyramids. Each pyramid has something different to offer its guests. From rainforests to the aquarium. This saurian is one of the largest in Texas and offers each visitor a look into the different and varying groups of aquatic life. Feel more in touch with the ocean and its life beyond the surface.
The Pleasure pier
If you want a day off from sightseeing and looking to have some fun, then look no further than the redeveloped Pleasure pier. Overlooking the beach, with multiple attractions this is a splendid day out for all. The pier is even home to the haunted Mayfield Manor, offering 12 rooms of terror. If you want a thrilling day out with a little sprinkle of terror then this is a great day out for you!
The Fort Worth Stockyards
This town was established in 1866 and got its name from the cattle industry that was involved in the logistics, administration, and sale of cattle all over America. The town has a museum that delves into the past of the cattle industry, the town is also one of the last of its kind. It’s now home to various attractions such as rodeo shows, wild west shopping, and rodeo concerts.
