San Antonio is one of the major cities in South Central Texas. This vibrant city is one of the most popular places for tourists to stay in Texas.
The Lone Star State is known for its unique history and culture and San Antonio is no exception. From world-famous battles to ancient gardens and world-class museums, there’s something for everyone here.
Here’s a list of some of the must-see places to visit in San Antonio…
The Alamo
One of San Antonio’s most popular attractions for tourists from around the world is the Alamo, originally the Mision San Antonio de Valero, a historic Spanish mission that became the site of the famous Battle of the Alamo in 1836.
The Battle of the Alamo is described as a pivotal moment in the Texas Revolution, and even though the defending Texan forces eventually lost, the Alamo remains a symbol of incredible courage and bravery against the odds.
Japanese Tea Gardens
San Antonio’s Japanese Tea Gardens are the perfect place to relax and reflect away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. If you’re craving some alone time surrounded by nature then this is the place to go. You can enjoy walking over traditional bridges and among native bushes and shrubs of every color.
Interestingly, this lush green oasis was actually built in an abandoned limestone quarry although you would never guess it had ever been anything other than a flourishing paradise.
San Antonio Market Square
The San Antonio Market Square is an outdoor plaza in the downtown section of the city. The plaza is roughly divided into two parts, the El Mercado Mexican Market and the Farmer’s Market.
Here you can find shops selling just about anything, so it’s a great place to look for souvenirs. You’ll also find a plethora of restaurants, cafes, and street food vendors selling classic ‘Tex-Mex’ cuisine.
Museum of Art
The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) is one of the city’s premier art museums. SAMA focuses on art stretching back through history with pieces on display from all around the world.
You can easily spend a day exploring the different displays and exhibitions here, from traditional Japanese baskets to marble carvings from ancient Rome and even modern sculptures of everyone’s favorite superheroes.
Cathedral Light Show
San Antonio’s San Fernando Cathedral is worth seeing in its right – it’s a fascinating example of local architecture – the real attraction is the light show that turns on around 9 pm throughout the week.
At night if you walk around the quiet streets you can see the Cathedral sparkling in the city center. This unique sight is a must-see when you’re in town and it makes a wonderful photo backdrop.
Mission San Jose
Another historical highlight is Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, one of San Antonio’s oldest Catholic missions. San Jose Mission is currently open to the public during the day and there’s plenty of information throughout the tour that tells you more about the mission’s history.
San Jose Mission was originally built back in 1720 and is the largest of the five Spanish missions in San Antonio.
Botanical Gardens
The San Antonio Botanical Gardens are a must-see for gardening enthusiasts and nature lovers. Best described by their own website, the Botanic Gardens are ‘a museum of plants, a tranquil escape, a living classroom, research and conservation facility, and entertainment venue.’
When the sun’s out the Botanic Gardens become a hot spot for picnics and eager sunbathers, so bring a blanket and relax under the gently swaying trees.
Majestic Theatre
San Antonio’s historic Majestic Theatre seats 2,264 guests and was originally designed by John Eberson in 1929. Since then the theatre has been carefully restored and renovated in order to keep the integrity of the design.
Majestic Theatre offers a range of different performances each year and you can check their website to book your afternoon matinee in advance.
San Antonio Zoo
San Antonio Zoo is located in Brackenridge Park and is a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike. The zoo is full of different attractions including its famous Big Cat Valley, now home to several magnificent lions.
The zoo is especially popular with children and families as there are a lot of kid-oriented activities throughout the park.
SeaWorld
From adrenaline-filled rides to incredible dolphin shows, the ever-popular SeaWorld is a must-see place to add to your itinerary. The endless option of rides and rollercoasters are especially popular with children so this is another great option for families.
SeaWorld is also an educational experience as visitors can learn more about the amazingly diverse range of marine life found in the oceans.
San Antonio River Walk
One of the most romantic spots in San Antonio is the River Walk. This colorful and charming pedestrian street has become an iconic (and very instagrammable) tourist destination and for good reason.
Along the river banks, you’ll find a sea of rainbow parasols that cast a gentle shadow on the sunny street below, creating a mini avenue you can stroll down.
